I immediately perked up and RSVPed to what would be my second Nike Training Club event. Over the summer, I attended an incredible NTC workout for the launch of the Nike Free shoe. We received a ton of Nike swag and had a blast sweating it out all over Brooklyn.
Kristin and Beth have also attended other Nike events and NTC workouts and raved about them, so I knew I’d be in for a good time. And of course, Nike didn’t disappoint. This was a women’s only event and was held to promote their Hyperwarm gear. How fitting that it ended up being a windy 22-degree evening in NYC! I met my friends at Niketown and we were loaded onto buses that took us to Battery Park, where we took ferries over to Ellis Island. Yes, I said that right…Nike freakin took over Ellis Island for the night.
We were provided with a Nike Pro Hyperwarm top, Nike hat and NTC gloves for the chilly workout. We quickly checked our bags and headed outside to find a workout space with the Manhattan skyline as the backdrop, Lady Liberty off to our side and plenty of half-frozen Gatorade in champagne glasses!
Badass trainer Holly Rillinger led the workout, which was basically a dance party mixed with squats, lunges, jumping jacks, and more. There was A LOT of jumping, which does not feel great on my leg issue, so I modified everything. I ended up doing a lot of stationary squats and taking a lot of pictures. I know I would’ve warmed up a LITTLE more if I’d been able to do all the exercises, but either way it was FREEZING outside and we were just waiting to get back indoors for the after party. After the workout, there was an incredible display of fireworks from a boat on the river and we finally headed inside!
As I mentioned, Nike certainly knows how to throw a party…so we were greeted with warm cups of apple cider and led upstairs to the real party. The bar had wine, beer and some kind of punch. There were also appetizers being passed around, but I didn’t end up getting any. Women, especially women who work out with NTC like to eat! So as soon as a server walked out with food, they were immediately surrounded by a swarm of women grabbing the snacks. Lucky for me, I stopped at Dig Inn before meeting at NikeTown, so I wasn’t that hungry!
After a drink and a little dancing, Beth, Julianne, Kristin and I grabbed the early ferry back to Battery Park. It was getting late and I was still SO cold, I just wanted to be in my bed! Somehow, we convinced one of the bus drivers to bring us back to Niketown with only 5 people on the bus, so we didn’t wait too long to make our trek home. All in all, another awesome Nike event. Although if I had to do it again, I’d request a back-up plan where we could do the workout indoors! I understand the Hyperwarm was supposed to help, but I was never able to shake the ”real feel” of 14 degrees!!!
