Wild Blueberry Maple Mint Smoothie

By posting this recipe I am entering a smoothie recipe contest sponsored by the Wild Blueberry Association of North America and I am eligible to win prizes associated with the contest. I was not compensated for my time.

Happy Monday!  I received an email last week from one of my fave RD bloggers, Kara Lydon, on behalf of the Wild Blueberry Association of North America, inviting me to participate in a smoothie recipe contest for dietitians and healthy living bloggers.  So here I am, super excited to kick off the week with this recipe for a light and refreshing smoothie, featuring–you guessed it!–wild blueberries.  After a weekend of indulgent football snacks and drinks, I’m guessing a fruit-packed smoothie will be well received! πŸ˜‰

Smoothies seem like something most people would rely on in the warmer summer months to cool down, but it turns out they’re actually most sought after during the winter months of January to March! This makes sense as it’s a time when we are all looking for ways to eat better and get more fruits and veggies in.  Either way, that fact makes me feel better, as smoothies are definitely one of my go-to breakfasts in winter months.

Before we get to the recipe, let’s talk bluebs (bloobs? I don’t know but I like pronouncing them that way).  Wild blueberries are different than regular blueberries and here’s why:

    • They’re WILD!  Duh.  Wild blueberries aren’t planted like regular blueberries, but rather they occur naturally in barrens and fields in Maine and Eastern Canada.
    • They have a more intense flavor.  Wild Blueberry plants grow wild and are genetically diverse with thousands of interlocking plants spreading naturally across the barrens. It’s this diversity that gives Wild Blueberries their complex and delicious flavor β€” an extraordinary mix of tart and sweet.
    • They’re antioxidant powerhouses!  Wild Blueberries have twice the antioxidant capacity of larger cultivated blueberries. A growing body of research shows the potential health benefits of Wild Blueberries including gut health, diabetes, cancer and brain health.

Ninety-nine percent of the Wild Blueberry crop is frozen, usually IQF (individually quick frozen) right at harvest, preserving both nutrition and taste.  Therefore, you can always find Wild Blueberries in the frozen fruit section of your local grocery store.  The brand I see in most stores is Wyman’s of Maine, but I also buy Wild Blueberries at Trader Joe’s!

Smoothie Ingredients

Now that you’re sold on these wild little beauties, let’s get into my recipe.  After brainstorming a bit, I decided to go with a maple and mint flavor combo to compliment the wild blueberries.  It’s a little out-of-the-box, but I promise it’s delish!  I don’t know about you, but I love all things mint.  I’m all about the clean, cool flavor of peppermint and this smoothie has a perfect mint kick.  For the liquid, I used both maple water and almond milk and just a touch of maple syrup for sweetness since it already has blueberries and a banana.  {Pro-tip:  I peel, slice and freeze bananas for smoothies in snack-size baggies, so they’re ready to pop into smoothies all week long.  Having more frozen components eliminates the need to add ice cubes, which makes the final product creamier and less watery!  You could also use an ice cube tray to freeze the maple water or other liquid.}
