Memorial Day Weekend: When Allergies Attack!

Whoa, please tell me I’m not the only one suffering from serious allergies over here!  These past few weeks have brought some sneeze attacks, itching and sinus pain my way, but the worst of it hit this weekend for sure.

Our long weekend started out with an anniversary celebration.  Friday marked 3 years that Boyfriend and I have been together, so we celebrated with dinner and drinks at our favorite Mexican place in town!  I bought him a few little gifts and created a scavenger hunt with clues that would bring him to those gifts.  I totally patted myself on the back for such a clever cute idea, but he won the gift game by getting us kayaks so we can go on lots of adventures!  I’m so pumped to get out on the water with them this summer!  After a delicious meal and even better margaritas, we drove up to the sound and caught sunset at one of our favorite spots. #Romantic 😉

I felt a little stuffy waking up Saturday but attributed it to the margaritas on Friday night, so I went to the gym while boyfriend headed off to work.  We started with some heavy deadlifts, then a quick WOD.  The workout was 3 rounds for time of 10 toes-to-bar, 8 handstand push-ups (modified on the box) and 10 deadlifts (135 lb for women) and I finished in 5:53.  I left the gym and headed to Target for some sunscreen and last minute gifts for my nephew, who turned ONE on Saturday!  Of course, I left with a lot more than just sunscreen and toys in my cart…because TARGET.  Ugh.

Saturday afternoon I went to the beach for a few hours to soak up the sun, but came home feeling pretty congested.  Boyfriend was feeling worse than me and we spent the evening watching the CrossFit Games in an anti-histamine induced blur.  I was able to sleep a little through the night, but NyQuil didn’t work for boyfriend, so Sunday started off slow with plenty of lounging and rest.  Not quite the weekend I was envisioning to unofficially kick off the summer season, but in the afternoon, we finally got ourselves together and headed up to Westchester to celebrate my nephew’s 1st birthday!

I can’t believe this little chunk is already a year old!  Everyone had fun playing with the water table, bounce house and bubbles, even the biggest kid of them all…

And allergies be damned, we enjoyed some yummy food and an Elmo cake, which was homemade by my super talented sister-in-law.

After cake, we hopped in the car to come home for more allergy medication and sleep!  Once again, I slept pretty well and boyfriend did not.  Since I woke up feeling much better, I decided I would be okay to workout on Monday.  Maybe I could sweat out the allergies?  Our gym did Murph last weekend, but since it was Memorial Day they still programmed a Hero WOD.

SMALL-2

Named for U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Marc Small, who lost his life in Afghanistan on February 12, 2009, this workout is anything but small.  Given my allergy situation, I actually scaled it back and completed “1/2 Small”, doing three rounds of 500m row, 25 burpees, 25 box jumps and 400m run, finishing in 26:05 and staying to cheer on everyone completing the full workout.  Although Hero WODs are tough, the pain is nothing compared to what our troops go through everyday and I actually enjoy the chance to use those workouts as a time to reflect, be thankful and honor our heroes.

Rain (and humidity) spoiled any plans for more beach time and a BBQ, but I took advantage of the time off getting some things done around the house and starting to plan for our upcoming vacation.  We’re thinking of doing a road trip down the East coast in July, doing a combo of hiking/sightseeing and beaching/relaxing. Any suggestions for great places to check out?  As of now my list includes hiking in the Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge Mountains and maybe getting touristy in Charleston.  Hopefully these allergies clear up and we’ll be up for lots of outdoor adventures!

What was your favorite part of this weekend?  Any must-see towns along the East coast?  Are you struggling with allergies too!? TELL ME ABOUT IT!

Random Thursday Things

Good morning, friends and Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  With lots of craziness and travel for work during National Nutrition Month, I can’t seem to get it together to draft, schedule or share another “real” blog post this week.  So I’m just popping in with some randomness today…

Boyfriend and I celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in our new home town over the weekend.  I wish I was celebrating today with the rest of the world, but instead I’m working outside of Philly and then driving all the way home to get stuck in lots of NYC/Long Island traffic.  Should be lots of fun! 😉

I loved my latest Stitch Fix (<—referral link)!  This was my 6th fix (check out previous ones here, here and here!) and I actually stopped getting fixes for awhile because I cut back on shopping and couldn’t justify a monthly or even quarterly fix with our new house payment and everything last year.

I asked for opinions over on Instagram and despite some hesitation on two pieces, I ended up keeping all five items this go-round, which hasn’t happened since my very first fix.  I’m especially excited about the Kut From The Kloth boyfriend jeans, which fit perfectly and I’ve heard good things about from other SF-lovers!  🙂

Being an auntie is the best!  I spent the day with my two nephews last Sunday and it was exhausting, but oh-so-good for my soul.  My oldest nephew even made his dietitian-auntie proud by saying “Mmmm nature’s candy!” while snacking on some raisins.  THE cutest!  🙂

I’m so excited about going to the SCAN Symposium in Portland this year!  SCAN is the Sports Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition dietetic practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  The symposium always has awesome presentations/speakers and I finally have the chance to attend this year.  I’m looking forward to meeting up with some fellow RDs (like Real-Talk Heather!) while in Portland and getting in some yoga, running and maybe even CrossFit.  If you have recommendations for restaurants, running trails and/or CrossFit boxes in the Portland area, I’d love to hear em!

I’m obsessed with Rocky.  He drives me bonkers sometimes (#bulldogmom life) but I’ve had him for more than 9 years and I still take pictures of him almost daily.  He is constantly doing funny things like falling asleep standing up or winking at me, which I love documenting to send to boyfriend or my mom or my old roommate.  Or to post on Insta!  Check out the creep last week, eyeballing me over the coffee table:

And on that note, it’s time to get this day started.  If you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day today, have a Guinness for me!

How do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Have you tried Stitch Fix yet?  Are you obsessed with your pet like I am?!  Tell me about it!
